Hammink, Walker pace Valparaiso past Detroit 81-74 (Jan 8, 2017)

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) Shane Hammink scored 23 points and Tevonn Walker had 21 points and 10 rebounds to help Valparaiso hold off feisty Detroit Mercy 81-74 on Sunday.

Hammink and Walker combined to shoot 26 for 29 from the free-throw line. Walker sealed it from the line shooting 5 for 6 to finish at 12 of 14. Hammink was 14-for-15 shooting from the line.

Jaume Sorolla's jumper with 7:23 to play gave Valparaiso (12-4, 2-1 Horizon) a 67-52 lead, but Detroit chipped away and reduced its deficit to 73-70 when Chris Jenkins made a 3 with 1:40 remaining.

But on the Crusaders' next possession, Hammink drew contact on his layup, got fouled and converted the 3-point play for a 76-70 lead.

Alec Peters added 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting and had 11 rebounds for the Crusaders.

Jenkins led Detroit (2-14, 0-4) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. DeShawndre Black had 14 points and Josh McFolley added 10.
