Gfeller hits 7 3s, scores 23; Montana beats Carroll 70-61

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) Brandon Gfeller tied his career highs by hitting seven 3-pointers and scoring 23 points, and Martin Breunig added 15 points and a career-best 19 rebounds to help Montana hold off NAIA Carroll (Mont.) for a 70-61 win Saturday night.

Fabijan Krslovic finished with 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots for Montana (2-1).

The Grizzlies led by 14 and had a 51-40 lead with 11 minutes to play, but layups by Oliver Carr bookended an 8-0 run by Carroll that trimmed its deficit to three about two minutes later.

A dunk by Breunig and back-to-back 3s by Gfeller made it 59-48 with 7:17 left and Carroll didn't threaten again.

Zach Taylor led Carroll with 16 points. Carr added 15 and Sam McMahon scored 14, including four 3-pointers.

Carroll shot 45 percent, compared to 41 percent for the Grizzlies, but Montana made more free throws (16) than the Fighting Saints attempted (14) and held a 13-4 edge on the offensive glass.
