Edmond Sumner expected to play vs. Marquette

Xavier redshirt point guard Edmond Sumner must have made an impression on the coaching staff during Thursday's practice.

"As long as he responds [Thursday] and [Friday] in a way that we hope he does then he'll play against Marquette," Chris Mack said earlier in the day during the Big East coaches' teleconference.

By Thursday night, Mack told Jeff Goodman of ESPN that he expects Sumner to make his return to the lineup on Saturday against Marquette.

"He's good to go," Musketeers coach Chris Mack told ESPN. "He won't have any restrictions, but he's not going to play 40 minutes Saturday."

Sumner has missed the past three games for No. 7 Xavier, recovering from a hard fall he suffered in the first few minutes of the Musketeers' 95-64 loss to Villanova on New Year's Eve. The 6-foot-5 Sumner collided with Villanova's Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins, taking the brunt of the fall. He was taken off the floor on a stretcher.

Sumner is third on the team in scoring with 11.0 points and second in assists at 3.1 per game.

Xavier, winner of three straight, travel to Marquette on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. EST start on FS1.
