Cooke scores 22, Dayton tops Iowa 82-77
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) Charles Cooke scored 22 points to lead Dayton past Iowa 82-77 in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational on Thursday night.
Cooke connected on two free throws to give Dayton a 78-77 lead with 50 seconds left. Scoochie Smith's layup extended the lead to 80-77 with 11 seconds to go.
Cooke secured the win by hitting two more free throw with 4 seconds remaining. He played the final few minutes of the game with four fouls.
Dayton (4-0) also got 16 points from both Kendall Pollard and Kyle Davis.
Jarrod Uthoff had 18 points for Iowa (3-1)
Iowa used a 16-2 run to take a 75-71 lead with 3 minutes to play. Mike Gesell's long-range jumper ended the surge.
Davis ended a 7-0 run with a slam during the first minute of the second half that put Dayton ahead 52-39.
The Flyers regained a double-digit advantage later when baskets by Cooke and Pollard made it 69-59 with 8 minutes to play.
Uthoff hit a 3-pointer that got Iowa within 65-59 midway through the second half.
Davis had 10 points as Dayton grabbed a 45-39 halftime lead.
Uthoff scored 15 first-half points for the Hawkeyes.

Dayton: Coach Archie Miller is 8-2 against Power 5 conference teams in tourney games.
Iowa: Coach Fran McCaffery needs one win to reach 100 with the Hawkeyes. He has 350 wins overall in his career.
BIG TURNOUT
The evening session crowd of 4,871 for Notre Dame-Monmouth and Iowa-Dayton set an attendance record for the 10-year old invitational. The previous mark was 4,658 on November 28, 2008 for Gonzaga-Maryland and Michigan State-Oklahoma State.

Dayton: Plays in a Friday night semifinal against Monmouth, who earlier Thursday upset No. 17 Notre Dame 70-68.
Iowa: Will face Notre Dame Friday night in the consolation round.
