Colorado Basketball: Buffs drop game to cross-state rival Rams

The Colorado Buffaloes may have dominated the series with the Colorado State Rams in football of late, but CSU turned the tables on the basketball court Wednesday night.

Derrick White posted 17 points for the Buffs and Wesley Gordon added another 11, but it wasn’t enough for Colorado, as the Rams won 72-58.

The Buffs struggled from the outside, making just 3 of 19 three-point attempts. They also watched the Rams sink 26 free throws. Still, it was just a 3-point game at halftime. Colorado State outscored the Buffs 42-31 in the second half behind Emmanuel Omogbo and Nico Carvacho, who combined for 30 points.

Xavier Johnson, who scored 27 points against Wofford, was held to just six points in this one. All in all, it was just a frustrating night for Colorado, who also committed 14 turnovers.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, but the Buffs made just 32 percent of their field goals and you just aren’t going to win many games playing like that.

The Buffs drop to 5-2 on the year with the loss. They will travel to the pacific coast to play Portland on Saturday, where they’ll look to get back on track. Portland is 4-2 on the young season.

Though conference play is yet to get underway, there are already five teams in the Pac-12 conference that have more wins overall than Colorado.
