Captain of SMU's only NCAA Final Four team dies

DALLAS -- Joel Krog, the captain of SMU's only NCAA Final Four team, has died at the age of 79.

SMU said Monday that Krog died Saturday in Houston. Details were not released.

Captain of the 1955-56 team, Krog averaged 12 points and 9.2 rebounds a game as a senior, when the Mustangs were 26-4 and reached the 1956 Final Four. SMU lost to eventual champion San Francisco, 86-68, in a semifinal.

He came to SMU from Ashland High School in Kentucky. Former SMU coach Bob Prewitt says Krog ''was a guy everyone loved to have as a teammate.''

The Mustangs were 54-24 in Krog's three years on the varsity, including a 28-1 home record in the final three seasons at Perkins Gymnasium before Moody Coliseum opened.
