Barnes charged with soliciting a minor

Former Providence College basketball star Marvin Barnes was arraigned Monday on a charge of soliciting a minor, the Providence Journal reported.

A 17-year-old girl from Cranston, R.I, told police that Barnes, 59, solicited her for sex after they met through his Rebound Foundation for at-risk youths.

He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance and is due to face court on March 19.

Barnes led the nation in rebounding in 1973-74 and was the second pick in the 1974 NBA and ABA drafts.

He spent two years in the ABA and four seasons in the NBA, but frequent off-court problems hindered his career.

Providence College retired his jersey in 2008 and he still holds the school's single-game scoring record of 52 points.
