Auburn suspends leading scorer Kareem Canty

Auburn lost its fifth straight on Saturday with a 66-55 loss to Georgia.

The Tigers entered the game without leading scorer Kareem Canty.

Before the game, Brandon Marcello of AL.com reported that the redshirt sophomore guard was suspended.

"Kareem has had some strong moments for our team this season," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement. "He has demonstrated that at the highest level of competition, he can win his matchup.

"However, his effort and attitude have been extremely inconsistent, which led to actions and behavior that are unacceptable. He will step away from the team for a while and may return later in the season. He is suspended indefinitely."

Canty, the transfer from Marshall, is averaging 18.3 points per game, which ranks him in the top-5 in the SEC in scoring. One of his best games of the season was a 26-point performance in a comeback win over Kentucky on Jan. 16.

Auburn's backcourt is already down junior Tahj Shamsid-Deem, who has been ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury. On Saturday, the starting backcourt of T.J. Lang and Bryce Brown combined for 18 points, off of 2-of-16 shooting, with one assist apiece. Cinmeon Bowers, the 6-foot-7 forward, started a point guard for the Tigers.

Auburn will look to end its current skid on Tuesday night at Tennessee.
