Floyd Mayweather Jr. says Conor McGregor fight won't happen: 'We must move on'

Former pound-for-pound kingpin Floyd Mayweather Jr. revealed why the much talked about superfight against Conor McGregor won’t happen.

One of the hottest topics in all of sports is the possibility of Floyd Mayweather Jr., boxing’s pound-for-pound and box office kingpin, squaring off against reigning UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

After all, the closest fans got to settling the Boxing vs. MMA argument was back in 2010 when UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture submitted former boxing champion James Toney at UFC 116. But since both Couture and Toney were past their primes when they entered the Octagon, fans were left with more questions than answers.

So after months of speculation over whether the superfight would become a reality, McGregor dropped a hint that he was simply waiting on Mayweather.

“Right now, I have Floyd running around the Showtime [Network] offices gathering my money. That’s what he’s doing,” said McGregor during the UFC 202 media call. “He’s running around the Showtime offices, begging those executives to come up with the $100 million cash he needs to fight me. As soon as he gets my money, we can fight.”

But now, the former pound-for-pound kingpin Floyd Mayweather Jr. revealed that, while he tried to book the fight against his Irish counterpart, his attempts were futile.

“I tried to make the fight happen between me and Conor McGregor,” Mayweather recently told FightHype.com. “We wasn’t able to make the fight happen, so we must move on.

“I feel honored to be the biggest name in MMA and in boxing and I don’t even compete no more.”

McGregor (20-3), was last seen avenging his previous loss to welterweight rival Nate Diaz at UFC 202 last month.

So with his business with his Diaz taken care of for the time being UFC President Dana White revealed he’s hoping his 145-pound champ will drop back down to lightweight and challenge reigning champion Eddie Alvarez.
