Boxing Briefs: Dawson, Steward split up
– Coming off a disappointing RTD 9 loss to Antonio Tarver in July, Australia’s Danny Green (31-4, 27 KOs) is signed to challenge WBC cruiserweight champ, Poland’s Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (45-2-1, 32 KOs) Nov. 30 at Challenge Stadium in Mt. Claremont, Australia.
– Chad Dawson and Emanuel Steward have parted ways after just one bout together. According to Dawson promoter Gary Shaw, neither Dawson nor Steward wanted to travel to the other’s home area for Dawson’s upcoming Oct. 15 bout with WBC light heavyweight champ Bernard Hopkins. Dawson has returned with former trainer “Ice Man” John Scully and has also taken on Winky Wright as “training advisor.”
– Andy Lee (26-1, 19 KOs) and Brian Vera (19-5, 12 KOs) will meet for the second time on Oct. 1, at he Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey as part of the Sergio Martinez-Darren Barker undercard. In the 2008 first meeting between the two, Vera scored the huge upset, stopping Lee in the seventh round.
– Roman “El Chocolatito” Gonzalez (29-0, 24 KOs) will be defending his WBA junior flyweight title against Mexico’s Omar Soto (22-7-2, 15 KOs) Oct. 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada as part of the Toshiaki Nishioka-Rafael Marquez undercard.
