Bellew to fight Makabu for vacant WBC cruiserweight title

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) Tony Bellew will fight Ilunga Makabu for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title at Everton's Goodison Park stadium on May 29.

Promoters announced the fight Friday.

It will be a first world title fight for the Liverpool-born Bellew since moving up from light heavyweight.

He says he's been training for months and ''this is the defining fight and night of my career.''

Bellew is 26-2-1, with 16 knockouts. The Congo-born Makabu is 19-1, with 18 KOs.

Bellew says the WBC belt ''has always been the one that I've wanted to win more than another.''
